Photo-aging occurs when the skin’s
connective tissues weaken and cause sagging, wrinkling and visible
imperfections of the skin. They appear in many different ways: as fine and coarse wrinkles that are rough and loose. They can become leathery in texture with deep, fine lines. Chronic sun exposure can result in skin developing an elastic quality, which gives it a yellowish chicken skin look. Mottled, darker patches of pigmentation are signs of sun and age spots. To prevent age or sun spots, it is recommended to use a minimum of SPF 30 every day, whether you are going to be exposed to a significant amount of sun or not. UVA and UVB rays attack and damage your skin in different ways. |
UVB rays cause your skin to tingle
and turn red, resulting in a sunburn or tan. It is considered the
“tanning ray” because it is strongest in the summer months. This ray only has the strength to penetrate the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin. In the past, sunscreens were only UVB protected. UVA rays can’t really be seen or felt, and are the same strength year-round, considered by most as a light X-ray. They penetrate your skin deeper and cause 80 percent of the damage your skin will sustain. Everyone is exposed to UVA rays indirectly, such as through windows and windshields.
