How to Protect Yourself from Photo-Damage

One of the hottest topics of the summer is the effect of UVA and UVB rays on skin. Overexposure to these harmful rays of the sun can cause a variety of damage to your skin that wonít appear overnight, including: facial fine lines, deep wrinkles, brown patches, roughness and more serious consequences of pre-cancerous skin lesions.

These effects become visible over the years and donít go away as easily as sunburns or tans. When skin begins to slowly show the latter signs of sun or photo damage, it is called photo-aging.

Photo-aging occurs when the skinís connective tissues weaken and cause sagging, wrinkling and visible imperfections of the skin.

They appear in many different ways: as fine and coarse wrinkles that are rough and loose. They can become leathery in texture with deep, fine lines. Chronic sun exposure can result in skin developing an elastic quality, which gives it a yellowish chicken skin look. Mottled, darker patches of pigmentation are signs of sun and age spots.

To prevent age or sun spots, it is recommended to use a minimum of SPF 30 every day, whether you are going to be exposed to a significant amount of sun or not.

UVA and UVB rays attack and damage your skin in different ways.

UVB rays cause your skin to tingle and turn red, resulting in a sunburn or tan. It is considered the ďtanning rayĒ because it is strongest in the summer months.

This ray only has the strength to penetrate the epidermis, or the top layer of the skin. In the past, sunscreens were only UVB protected.

UVA rays canít really be seen or felt, and are the same strength year-round, considered by most as a light X-ray. They penetrate your skin deeper and cause 80 percent of the damage your skin will sustain. Everyone is exposed to UVA rays indirectly, such as through windows and windshields.

The long term effects of photo-aging are preventable and treatable through special masks, peelings and other cosmetic treatments that specifically target an individualís condition.

Those beauty treatments work by sloughing off the top layer of cells to reveal new, healthy cells.

If used regularly, those special faczial treatments will keep skin looking vibrant and healthy and dramatically reduce the appearance of wrinkles over time.
